See you over there! - [Pub sketches](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/10/19/pub-sketches/) - Some sketches from the pub, at a meetup group where you draw each other (handily). I have this really cool new Moleskine with a concertina structure, hence the lack of break between pages. - [Michael Kors storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/08/26/michael-kors-storyboard/) - Storyboard for Mario Testino, this time for Michael Kors. I really need to think of a use for the storyboard artist on location... ad here, full boards here. - [Burberry Black](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/08/25/burberry-black/) - I've been doing some storyboarding for Mario Testino! Obviously I am thrilled to get the work, let alone the insight into the working practices of such a great creative mind. This is the first campaign I worked on, back last year - Burberry Black, full board here and ad here.. I even ended up on a shoot (there was - [Slimfast storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/08/13/slimfast-storyboard/) - Featuring Alexandra Burke. I used Copic markers for shading on this job, slightly different look to my usual work. Full boards here. - [Fens sketching](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/08/12/fens-sketching/) - Some fenland sketching. - [O2 More For You](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/08/11/o2-more-for-you/) - I've been a bit slack at updating my portfolio recently! Here are some storyboards for the recent O2 More For You campaign. Click the picture to see the full board. - [The Fens](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/08/02/the-fens/) - I've been doing some landscape painting recently. I live on the Fens and for some reason I am compelled to paint the landscape, even though there basically isn't any (it's almost completely flat). The skies are where the landscape's at but they're very challenging; solution: scribble with paint brush in irritation. 2nd go. - [Suffolk](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/05/31/suffolk/) - I've just been on Deborah Baynes's pottery course in Suffolk. From the road outside their house you can look across the Orwell to where Maersk etc. container ships dock at Felixstowe. I have a thing for container ships so this was pretty exciting. According to our hosts, Rotterdam and this port are the only european ports than can - [Train 18.7.15](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/05/23/train-18-7-15/) - A sketch from last summer of my first train ride to London as owner of small child. It was total heaven to be able to sit and draw for a while. - [Train 10.5.16](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/05/20/train-10-5-16/) - On the train to London for work, musing over my recent troubles with sketching. I worry that storyboarding has made me too impatient to handle a longer drawing. - [Urban sketching](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/05/19/urban-sketching/) - A sketch of William Pitt, in Pembroke College, Cambridge. It was way too cold for the allotted 2hrs of drawing; after managing that one I produced worse and worse work until I gave up and went off for hot chocolate. I am clearly a fair weather sketcher. Also I do get a bit bored drawing buildings, - [Permanent TSB](https://kathrynpinker.com/2016/05/05/permanent-tsb/) - I have a load of post-maternity leave work that I can't put up yet because it's still in production but this one was turned around quickly - for Academy/directing duo Twin, for Permanent TSB. You can see the full board here. - [](https://kathrynpinker.com/2015/11/11/7328/) - Hello out there... so I am You can see work from before I went on maternity leave here, including the award-winning SSE campaign, Coca-Cola and 3M. I was given the layout and plant names and then maxed out my Pinterest saving pictures of each one to refer back to. I enjoyed this job - orderliness and plants, a satisfying combination for a control-freak nature lover like - [Lycra storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/09/26/lycra-storyboard/) - I was asked to just do the end frames for a scene in a Lycra commercial, shot by Philippe Andre, as part of their 'Lycra Moves You' campaign. - [M&S Back to School](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/09/17/ms-back-to-school/) - Key frames for the M&S 2014 Autumn Back to School campaign.. some very cute ads here directed by Si&Ad at Academy. - [IBM 'People for Smarter Cities' storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/09/12/ibm-people-for-smarter-cities-storyboard/) - This was a 2014 storyboard for IBM's 'People for Smarter Cities' campaign, directed by Phil Robson at The Mill. People using tape and chalk to write/draw things on their city are used to promote the idea of big ideas springing up locally. You can see the finished ad here and rest of the board here. - [Scottish Referendum storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/09/10/scottish-referendum-storyboard/) - Topical! Husband and I went to Loch Lomond for a week earlier in the summer, here are some sketches: - [Volkswagen Golf 1987 storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/06/16/volkswagen-golf-1987-storyboard/) - I want to add pencilled storyboards to what I can offer, so by way of example I've drawn this one for the classic Volkswagen Golf ad from the 80s. Very funny how glamorous it all is and then you finish on the 1987 model of Golf - less glamorous. The full board is here. - [First Great Western storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/06/09/first-great-western-storyboard/) - Here's a page from the First Great Western storyboard I did recently, for their 2014 summer campaign. The action is meant to be viewed as though from a moving train - it's kind of a guideline storyboard as they didn't have the actual locations nailed yet. I was quite pleased with how it came out. - [Adidas 'Unlock The Game' storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/05/20/adidas-unlock-the-game-storyboard/) - I have so much storyboarding work to put up from the last few months but it's all in research/post-production so I can't! This one has been made though - it was a spot for Adidas, kind of a viral if I remember rightly, directed by Niall O'Brien at Academy. I think I did the neats - [Japanese Zen Gardens](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/04/10/japanese-zen-gardens/) - One of the illustrations (well they're plans really) for the book Japanese Zen Gardens by Yoko Kawaguchi which has just come out. It was a lovely book to research, spending my time looking at photos of these beautiful and ancient creations. I would love to see them for myself one day; some aren't even open to - [05:11 - Pages 1 & 2](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/04/09/0511-pages-1-2/) - I'm doing a comics project with my very talented friend Yen Ooi; she's doing the writing and I'm doing the drawing. It's called 05:11 and features two sinister fellows called The Grey Gentlemen, inspired by two characters of the same name in the novel Momo by Michael Ende. Kind of like Frasier spinning off from - [Life drawing](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/03/14/life-drawing-3/) - There are some handy life drawing sites out there, one of which is https://artists.pixelovely.com/. You can set it to give you gesture exercises (where you get 30-60 seconds per drawing) which is great for improving your focus and getting down the main shapes. In the absence of having somebody naked to hand, I'm doing about half - [elephant](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/03/05/elephant/) - Drawing an elephant on Google Images. - [Spoons!](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/01/28/spoons/) - I made some spoons! I took Barn Carder's one day spoon carving workshop (see his website here and a bbc film about him here) in Stepney. My bus used to go past his shop on Hackney Road; all I could see was a man on a stool surrounded by a sea of wood shavings, so - [](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/01/22/6796/) - Awaiting a brief... - [Talk Talk Christmas storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/01/15/talk-talk-christmas-storyboard/) - A page from the TalkTalk 'Winter Wonderland' ad that went out at Christmas (2013), featuring the same princess and astronaut who started their affair earlier in the year. The rest of the frames are here and you can watch the ad here. It was directed by Us at Academy, who also did this for Foals - [Evie's bag](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/01/15/evies-bag/) - I made my god-daughter a gardening tool bag for Christmas - I'd never made a bag before so it was a fairly improvised affair, guided by this excellent tutorial on Bijou Lovely. I got her some mini tools as well, so cute. Then realised at three she was possibly too young for them, but maybe she - [Branston Pickle storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/01/13/branston-pickle-storyboard/) - A page from the storyboard for the Branston Pickle ad that went out just before Christmas, directed by Si&Ad at Academy. It’s about a dad who’s generally rubbish at most things, but one skill he does have is the ability to make an amazing sandwich. You can see the rest of the pages here and the - [January](https://kathrynpinker.com/2014/01/10/january/) - Some sketches from the last fortnight. The view from near the cottage we stayed at in Northumberland. This is no. 2 out of three attempts to draw it. I wasn't feeling very patient that day, rockpools are a pain in the ass to be honest. Elsie was permanently asleep, must be the sea air. Some - [Big fat cowl](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/12/03/big-fat-cowl/) - A big yellow cowl I knitted. Largely based on this pattern but with a few alterations. I used Rowan Big Wool, which is lovely and soft and FAT, and of course you make something like this so quickly. It is one cosy scarf. - [I dream of spires](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/11/11/i-dream-of-spires/) - We spent the weekend in Oxford seeing Cabaret and wandering about the city, trying to devise ways we could move there. We did a walking tour on Sunday on a perfect autumn afternoon.. chiselled shadows cutting across gentle yellow brickwork and a glowing blue sky, set against the tones of our softly-spoken guide who seemed - [A home in Kent](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/11/07/a-home-in-kent/) - I finished this commission a few weeks ago - it's a similar idea to the picture of Ringmer Park. I've put my illustration work on hold for the moment while I concentrate on storyboarding, but I wanted to stick it up anyway. It's a watercolour with the odd bit of gouache - the space is - [O2 'A Dog's Heart' storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/11/04/o2-a-dogs-heart-storyboard/) - Here's a bit of the storyboard for O2's current 'Be More Dog' ad out at the moment. It was directed by Bison for Academy; you can see the finished thing here and the rest of the frames here. - [Talk Talk storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/09/05/talk-talk-storyboard/) - Here's a couple of storyboard pages for the Talk Talk 'Date Night' ad that's out right now. They then race together to the - [Verizon 'Power In Numbers' storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/09/02/verizon-power-in-numbers-storyboard/) - A recent storyboard for Verizon which went out in America (they're a US telecoms company) - the message was about sharing your mobile network with people you know. You can see the rest of my pics here and the ad here. - [Indoor](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/09/01/indoor/) - In 2011 I storyboarded a short film for Si&Ad, who are a directing duo I regularly work with. Actually it was the first thing I did for them. The film's not on release yet, but it's been selected/awarded at several film festivals, which is pretty awesome. I can't put all the frames up yet but - [Sophie](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/09/01/sophie/) - A portrait of my friend's daughter Sophie. I thought there was something very sweet and gentle about her which I was trying to capture. - [Sleeping dogs](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/09/01/sleeping-dogs/) - Elsie and my parents' dog Lottie, at night in the kitchen. Because she is my dog, Elsie gets a better basket. - [Aldeburgh](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/08/21/aldeburgh/) - I have started using my sketchbook again. I've gone for perhaps a year not really doing much of it; I just didn't want to, so I took an intentional break rather than feel guilty all the time. Which worked really well because for no apparent reason I feel like it again. It's interesting as well - [Kurio storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/06/05/kurio-storyboard/) - A storyboard for a pitch for the Kurio tablet, which is aimed at kids. It's nice, they wanted to show that you can use the spray and put your clothes on straight afterwards and to that end hired a dancer to dress really quickly, with no special effects. I think it's just on US TV at - [green pants](https://kathrynpinker.com/2013/01/10/green-pants/) - Knitting jumpers for my friends' babies got a bit too time-consuming so I found this pattern on Ravelry (look up 'Vanilla'). It's fun to make as there are no seams and it's quite quick. I think in the US it's called a soaker (ugh), the baby wears it over their nappy. Obviously making it in - [business card roughs](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/12/10/business-card-roughs/) - While sorting through some stuff over the weekend I came across all the roughs I did while trying to work what picture, out of all the possible pictures in the universe, I was going to put on my business card. My starting point was that I wanted a person to be in it, and if - [Morrisons 'For Your Christmas' Storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/11/20/morrisons-for-your-christmas-storyboard/) - Here are a couple of pages from my storyboard for this year's Morrisons Christmas ad, directed by Si&Ad at Academy. At last I can post some of the illustrations I was doing over the summer for Funny Peculiar, Will Young's autobiography. He gave me the chapters as he wrote them and I went through thinking up ideas, 2 per chapter. It was so much fun; the book is v amusing (as you'd expect) but - [the grey gentlemen](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/09/24/very-tired/) - I'm drawing a comic for a lovely lady I met at the Kapow! comic con - her name's Yen Ooi and she's a writer (you can see her stuff here). It's completely new territory for me, I have no idea if it will work or if I'll be able to do it but I read a - [Be Sensible](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/09/07/be-sensible/) - A couple of pages from the storyboard for The Trainline 'Be Sensible' ad which is out at the moment. It's another one for Rubie's costume hire, this time for Disney Princess outfits. You can see the rest of the frames here. - [Berlin](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/08/08/berlin/) - My fancy Richard and I went to Berlin last week, for a friend's wedding. I'd never been and found the whole thing totally fascinating - it's mad to see the Luftwaffe HQ and the Berlin Wall inside of one walking tour in one city centre. There is so much to think about. We weren't in - [A flotilla of hats](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/08/03/a-flotilla-of-hats/) - According to this. Practising one of the pics for the project I'm working on at the mo. - [Spidey](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/07/23/spidey/) - I've been super busy with a very fun book illustration project. But with the exception of a couple more pics at a later date, I've finished! Literally as the sun comes out, perfect timing. I've just been trying out odosketch - I resolved the disaster of my owl's body with a big posh coat, obviously. - [Boing Boing Tigger](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/07/11/boing-boing-tigger/) - Another A A Milne-themed storyboard.. this one's for Boing Boing Tigger, a teddy which makes a boinging sound, surprisingly, when you shake it around. - [The anatomist](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/07/10/the-anatomist/) - I went to a private viewing of the Leonardo da Vinci: Anatomist exhibition at the Queen's Gallery last week - my first visit to Buckingham Palace after ten years living in London. (or in Costa outside)](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/05/21/kapow-or-in-costa-outside/) - I went to my first comic con, Kapow!, this weekend, mainly out of curiosity. I wanted to see what it was like to hang out in that world; storyboarding obviously isn't far removed, and I'm wondering where else I could go with it. I was hoping to sketch some fan boys/girls but there wasn't really - [Bolinda Vale roughs](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/05/16/bolinda-vale-roughs/) - Some roughs for the watercolour landscape of a few posts back (see it here). Because this project was quite a learning curve, I took several roughs nearly to completion to check my methods were working! This was actually one of the hardest jobs I've had; it may look simple but watercolours are a lifetime's learning so there were a few trial runs! I often use them but this was - [Dizzy](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/05/04/dizzy/) - Some socks I knitted recently... The pattern is from The Gentle Art of Knitting by Jane Brocket and I used self-striping yarn, which is fun. I enjoy it when something happens like a heel but not sure how patient I am when it comes to the long straight bits. - [Better to have loved and lost](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/05/02/better-to-have-loved-and-lost/) - A sad tale - this is a little phone bag I knitted for my spanking new smartphone. But alas it was lost in the pub. So now my screen is slowly getting covered in little scratches. - [Business card finally materialises](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/05/01/business-card-finally-materialises/) - I've spent rather too long working on my business cards. I had an idea which was never right, but I kept working at it like throwing good money after bad. Eventually in despair I scrapped the whole thing and started over, with a better idea which meant it all happened much faster. Here's one side: - [M&S Storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/04/27/ms-storyboard/) - I was asked to do the storyboard for the Marks & Spencer Jubilee ad recently - here's a page. You can see the - [Elsie](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/04/25/elsie/) - Various things including lots of work, getting engaged and trying to address the garden before it takes over Hackney have kept me from my blog. It's straight out of Alice In Wonderland, you half expect the Queen of Hearts to come stomping round the corner. - [Liverpool win on aggregate](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/01/26/liverpool-win-on-aggregate/) - Rich watching the match last night. His posture during Liverpool games alternates between this, tense and waiting to spring, to sprung and screaming at the TV; this applies to both good and bad results. He felt it was important the score was added to the picture but I'm not sure it would be there if - [Sculptures](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/01/18/sculptures/) - Wow I haven't done any sketching of stuff in front of me for ages. These - [Christmas cardigan](https://kathrynpinker.com/2012/01/05/christmas-cardigan/) - When time allows over the last couple of months I've been knitting a cardigan for my lovely goddaughter Evie's Christmas present. I promise the art will return but in the meantime you have to put up with my various attempts at knitwear. Here's Evie doing the right thing and wearing it while I'm there. - [Richer V Loomis](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/11/14/richer-v-loomis/) - I've been trying out a new method of getting people and heads down quickly, so there are a lot of figure drawing sketches lying around at the moment and not much else. Here are some androgynous folk.. I think I've found the perfect teaching combination in Andrew Loomis and Paul Richer, two great artists who - [It's love](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/11/02/its-love/) - I discovered some amazing marker pens today, which would usually be the sort of thing I can't justify spending the money on, but I was armed with a voucher from my v. generous ex-colleagues so it seemed the moment had to be seized. They're Tombow double-ended pens (brush/fine tip) and both the cut of the - [Green & White Jumper](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/10/21/green-white-jumper/) - Introducing my first attempt at knitting a piece of clothing, as opposed to accessories... this is a Sirdar pattern for a child of 6 - 12 months, and was a present for my friend Ness's baby Samson. If you look at the back you can see how many errors I had to fix but overall - [McDonalds 1955 Storyboard](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/10/10/mcdonalds-1955-storyboard/) - Here are a few pages from a recent storyboard for McDonalds. This is my first attempt at a bag - it's fun working out how - [Unity House](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/07/05/unity-house/) - This is a commission I did about 2 weeks ago for a friend. It's of a venue in Jamaica called Unity House where another friend of hers was married; she thought she'd give the couple this as their wedding present. It's drawn in ink and wash and at her request I gave it a torn - [L.D.](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/06/29/l-d/) - Some more life drawing. - [Red Whippet](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/06/13/red-whippet/) - It's a whippet! I'm told that I've managed to create a creature that doesn't look like any one member of the animal kingdom. I also think it has an air of the evil penguin in Wallace & Gromit about it. I don't care; as my first attempt at anything more than a hamster in amigurumi, I - [MyStyle Jewellery Storyboards](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/06/09/mystyle-jewellery-storyboards/) - Here's an extract from a recent storyboard. The client was MyStyle and the product is a make-it-yourself jewellery kit. They're the same people who make the Wild Science kit - it's aimed at young teenage girls. You can see - [Eliot, Orla & Magnus](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/06/08/eliot-orla-magnus/) - Here's another commission from just before we went to Greece. First we have the head of the pack, Eliot: - [Blue Star](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/06/02/2566/) - A couple of sketchbook pages, the first one from the Blue Star ferry on the way from Athens to Paros.. ..and here is the lovely tortoise who lived between our flat and the neighbour's on the island. - [Paros](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/05/31/paros/) - Hello folks - I'm just back from a lovely 2 weeks in Greece. Here's a project I've been working on this Spring. Some friends of mine from the wonderful art school I attended 5 years ago on the Greek island of Paros (the Aegean Center for The Fine Arts) returned there this May to be married. - [Wild Science Storyboards](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/04/22/wild-science-storyboards/) - Here's an extract from a storyboard I did last month for the 'Wild Science' range of cosmetic products, aimed at young teenagers. The idea is that you create your own beauty treatments using a kit; in this ad the girls are making various concoctions and trying them out on each other. Click the images to enlarge. - [Life drawing](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/04/18/life-drawing-2/) - A selection from my last few weeks of life drawing. It's constantly challenging, but I love it. - [Something red](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/04/16/2230/) - The amigurumi obsession continues.. what do you think this is going to be? - [Return of the blog](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/04/15/2174/) - My blog's been broken for a couple of weeks but is now fixed, hurrah. I'm quite busy with a couple of commissions at the moment (will post when completed) but in the meantime here are some sketchbook pages. This is the dining room of the hotel we went to for Mother's Day - pretty middle-England, - [Life drawing](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/03/01/life-drawing/) - Charcoal drawings from my new Monday night life drawing class. - [On the buses](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/02/28/on-the-buses/) - Sketches from a couple of recent trips to work on the bus. - [Big fish & Little fish](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/02/28/big-fish-little-fish-2/) - I posted this card when I first began this blog, which was also before I had Photoshop, so it wasn't the best quality image. I wanted to improve on that and tidy it all up a bit, as I quite like it and wanted to add it to my Illustration page. Little Fish is sadly - [Acura Storyboards](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/02/21/acura-storyboards/) - Here are some storyboard frames I did for an ad last year. It was an awesome-sounding film for Acura cars, where dancers and visual effects swirl and gather in sync with the music played over the top. The dancers were to be a kind of luminous white if I remember rightly, on a black background. - [Olive](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/02/18/2009/) - I had a terrifying experience yesterday, namely looking after my friend Emily's baby for an hour while she was in a meeting. Myself and little Olive sat in a cafe while I drew her. That bit was lovely; then the eyes half-opened and in such a position she continued to lie for about 20 minutes - [Blue rodent](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/02/17/blue-rodent/) - Indulge me.. this is after all a blog for craft as well as art. This is my first attempt at amigurumi crochet. It's meant to be a hamster but its lack of feet disturbed me, so I added a tail. I have no idea what it is now. - [Sunday](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/01/31/sunday/) - Drawing Rich with Conté crayon, pencil and my nice new Copic pen. I'm quite pleased with it as both nib and cartridge are replaceable and it's made of aluminium, mmm. - [Bedecked lamp](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/01/28/bedecked-lamp/) - I have a bit of a thing for Parker Quink ink. It separates out into bluey greys and yellows when you use it diluted as paint, an effect I quite like. - [Glorious gardens](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/01/25/glorious-gardens/) - Ok so this is the big project I had on before Christmas. My client has a beautiful garden by the South Downs in Sussex which he opens to the public in the summer. He gives his visitors a print-out of information about the garden but wanted to accompany this with a aerial plan. So my - [Hungry Hyacinths](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/01/18/hungry-hyacinths/) - It's a bit of a mess but what the heck. I was getting increasingly hungry while drawing/painting it and consequently sped up as I went along. I will do an improved Version II when the bulbs are in bloom. Spring seems to suddenly be here and it's filling the flat with light and the garden, - [Pencils](https://kathrynpinker.com/2011/01/13/pencils/) - The view from my boyfriend's family's house in Wales after a snow flurry, and a self-portrait. I don't look very happy but I think it's just intense concentration. - [Christmas and the living is cosy](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/12/29/christmas-and-the-living-is-cosy/) - [here and there](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/12/14/here-and-there/) - Nelson's column and some animals. - [Rowr](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/11/12/rowr/) - Well there's not a lot happening on the blog at the moment. I have quite a big commission on, which is great, but sketching is definitely on the back seat. I'll post the piece I'm working on in the new year once the recipient has been given it as his present.. for now here's a - [Intermittent sketching](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/09/20/intermittent-sketching/) - I'm not sketching at full throttle at the moment; life has been pretty busy but that's no excuse. Looking for a job makes me feel guilty if I do anything else.. it'll only be part-time though, so I can devote the rest of my week to the pursuit of all things arty. That was some - [The Liverpool Apron](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/08/25/the-liverpool-apron/) - Here's an apron I made from a Liverpool FC shirt for my boyfriend's birthday. I bought a cheap 2nd hand shirt off eBay and converted it in rather haphazard fashion into an apron. It has these gorgeous double-sided velvet ties. It went down well - I thought he needed a manly apron to cook in. - [Handmade sketchbooks](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/08/08/handmade-sketchbooks/) - This is the sketchbook I made for my mother; I've meant to post this for ages. As with the other sketchbook I made for myself, it has a fabric cover and is filled with Fabriano 5 Liscia (hot-pressed) 210gsm 50% cotton paper. All the posts from South America (see category to the right) were drawn/painted on - [Dexter & Teasel](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/08/03/dexter-teasel/) - This is a watercolour I did just before we went to South America. My cousin commissioned me to paint her (engaged) friend's two labradors; she and her girlfriends were then going to give it to her as a surprise wedding present. The wedding was this weekend, the painting was a success, so at last I - [Anatomy](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/07/30/anatomy/) - Not a lot of action with the sketchbook at the moment as I'm back studying the human body. I'm continuing to use the (amazing) 19th century classic, Artistic Anatomy by Paul Richer, which I was reading before we went away. Started by revising the eye and now I'm on to the neck - it's so - [a London summer](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/07/27/a-london-summer/) - We're back in London, moving in to our new place and not posting enough on here. We now live on a park so lots of opportunities for figure studies.. Also below, a visit to the British Museum, one of my favourite places. On this occasion I went to see the Italian Renaissance Drawings exhibition, stuffed - [Peruvian craft](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/07/02/peruvian-souvenirs/) - Here are three souvenirs I bought in Peru - all beautiful examples of crafts found around the country. It's extraordinary how many different kinds of craft the country boasts, and the quality of design. I read that Peruvians have, through time, mastered every kind of weaving technique known except for those that are machine-made. Here - [The Manu Biosphere Reserve](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/07/01/manu/) - Well we are home and very happy, eating roast beef and drinking PG Tips. Our month volunteering in the Peruvian Amazon was brilliant - pretty difficult to draw any animals though as they're either impossible to see or moving very fast. But anyway here we go, my last travel sketch entry... The lodge we volunteered - [The Inca Trail](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/05/25/the-inca-trail/) - And so we set off on the 'moderate to strenuous' Inca trail, a trek through the eastern flank of the Andes that lasts 4 days and ends at the numero uno tourist destination of Machu Picchu. This is the view from the notorious Dead Woman's Pass, day 2, looking back the way we'd come. Notorious - [Sacsayhuaman](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/05/25/sacsayhuaman/) - Cusco was built by the Incas in the shape of a puma, with Sacsayhuaman as its head. A fortress built at around 3500m (correct me if I'm wrong), we dragged ourselves up here partly as training for the Inca trail. Local women and children tended a flock of llamas on the grassy slopes below; one of - [Back to Peru](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/05/13/back-to-peru/) - Gancho, the bulldog in the hostel where we stayed on our return to the Ecuadorian mainland. You couldn't be too nice to him or he'd be after your leg. And other passengers waiting in Lima airport, Peru, for our flight to Cusco. Unfortunately we're back with the dim photography.. Cusco, ancient capital of the Incas and 3400m above sea level, is a - [Islas Galápagos](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/05/07/islas-galapagos/) - After Lima, we flew to the coast of Ecuador, and then 1000km westwards over the sea to the Galápagos Islands. Our 8 days in the Galápagos were some of the best of my life - I've always wanted to go there. We stayed on a gleaming white catamaran with 10 other passengers, 7 crew and 1 naturalist guide. - [Flamingos in Chile, labradors in Peru](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/05/07/flamingos-in-chile-labradors-in-peru/) - Well it's been a while since I've posted on here. After Salta we crossed the Andes into Chile, where we visited some (not very impressive) salt flats. Did however see beautiful flamingoes and go on a wonderful astronomy excursion. I have now seen the rest of the Milky Way as it stretches across a deep - [So long Salta](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/04/15/salta-in-paints/) - My final picture of Salta - this was the view from our hotel room. I thought it captured Salta's charm perfectly - the lovely architecture (you can only see its roof here but the building below was a grand colonial building in the midst of restoration) with all the subtropical greenery surrounding it. If I had - [Salta La Linda](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/04/11/salta/) - We are now in beautiful Salta, city of madly ornate, pastel-coloured churches and shuttered colonial buildings. Verdant green hills surround us while hummingbirds hover at flowers on the terraces. I've been ill so will be getting out to draw some buildings next week. For now here are some indoor shots.. Salta has a strong tradition of folk music and - [Morocha](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/04/02/morocha/) - The wonderful hostel La Bolsa in Bariloche have very kindly sent me a photo of Morocha, the poodle I got obsessed by a couple of posts ago, with her litter of puppies/kittens. I think she looks a little fraught. - [Café culture V jungle law](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/04/01/869/) - On the left are sketches from a café in Neuquen; the right is of a print I really liked in a café in San Telmo (BA). It described itself as a café for artists and literary types and this was a poster advertising a poets' reading in 1983. It was the perfect café: beaten-up wooden - [All creatures very great and very small](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/03/20/allcreaturesgreatandsmall/) - The gorgeous grey Morocha, a poodle at the hostel La Bolsa in Bariloche. She was once a street dog and had puppies after the owners took her in. They had some kittens at the time whose mother wasn't interested (I forget why) so they gave them to Morocha and she nursed them too. She had the loveliest temperament.. - [El Chalten (again)](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/03/14/el-chalten-again/) - Some more of the mountains around El Chalten - I was so attached to them, I kept drawing them. This painting I did on a hike; the spike is Cerro Torre, renowned for the near impossibility of climbing it and the controversy over who first achieved this. The very top is covered in a cap of ice, - [Kitchen in a cabana](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/03/05/kitchen-in-a-cabana/) - We've been staying in a little - well actually quite big - cabana (cabin) in El Chalten (see last post). We've only got a couple more days in it before we're cast back into backpacking world.. here is Rich working on his blog at the kitchen table. - [Argentina](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/03/01/argentina/) - Well it's taken me ages but have finally uploaded some sketches from my travels on here. I didn't really have my drawing mojo on for weeks, but we've stopped in a Patagonian town called El Chalten for a while and with a bit of a relax, it's come back. Obviously I'm not travelling with a - [Handmade Sketchbook](https://kathrynpinker.com/2010/01/22/handmade-sketchbook/) - I'm travelling in South America and am hoping to post drawings and paintings from my travels to this page - starting with these photos of my sketchbook, which I made before coming away (I've made another for my mother which I'll post on my return). This one was photographed on the roof of our hostel in Buenos - [Wenlock Priory](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/12/14/wenlock-priory/) - While in Ludlow I visited the remains of Wenlock Priory, in Much Wenlock. Over the road there was a field of these beautiful orange, shaggy cows - possibly Highland cows? - [Ludlow](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/11/30/ludlow/) - The front room of our funny little wood-beamed house in Ludlow, Shropshire. We are now pro fire-builders. And a doodle of Tony Benn, who we went to see answering audience questions while there. The crazy dog on the left is by my secretly artistic boyfriend. - [Barcelona](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/10/07/barcelona/) - Sketch with my new Pentel brush pen of our friend Garret's flat in Barcelona. - [Wanderings](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/09/15/wanderings/) - A self-portrait.. not a lot for the blog at the moment as have a bit of work on. - [Understanding the face](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/08/27/teaching-myself-the-face/) - I'm on a path of self-education at the moment with my art. I have several books I'm using (see the About section to the right), and right now I'm splitting my time between anatomy/the human form and watercolours. Having some knowledge from previous studies, I began my current investigation of the head with magazines - - [Spiky plant](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/08/24/spiky-plant/) - A birthday card for a friend... - [enigma + rabbit](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/08/21/601/) - A sketch of the most random thing I've seen in a long time. I left our building - which is in the heart of Manchester - at about 9am on Wednesday morning, just as this guy skateboarded past. He was completely nonchalant, like he was just getting from A to B. I can't remember if - [quack.](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/08/19/quack/) - [Crayon card](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/08/14/peanut-card/) - A card for my friends Laura and Steve who have just had a baby. We'd discussed previously the ick of other people referring to your unborn child as things like 'the peanut'. - [](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/08/10/583/) - Sketchy trees. - [Wales](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/08/07/578/) - My boyfriend's uncle, Gordon, fast asleep after his daughter's wedding. - [The Cotswolds](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/08/06/571/) - The Egypt Mill hotel in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, on holiday last week. There was a lot of duck-drawing practice to be had here. - [Kent](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/08/05/568/) - The tent village at my friend Emily's house - our tent was the very small (and lurid pink) one in the foreground.. - [Manchester Museum](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/07/22/manchester-museum/) - This morning I paid a visit to Manchester Museum. They have an interesting collection. A crazy amount of taxidermy (see Swamp Deer below) and randomly, a vivarium, in which I spent ages trying to draw tiny frogs. - [](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/06/25/550/) - Sunbathing in Heaton Park, Manchester. - [Watercolour squares](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/06/21/watercolour-squares/) - A little study on colour combinations with watercolours. - [How to live](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/06/18/pigeons-in-the-sun/) - Two pigeons hanging out in the sun, on a ledge opposite our flat. They do this for much of the day.. I think the animals are great proponents of the benefits of being idle. - [Knowsley Safari Park](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/06/12/knowsley-safari-park/) - Sketches from a trip to Knowsley Safari Park, near Liverpool. So strange seeing lions lying under English trees.. they all seemed pretty happy about the approach of summer, understandably. - [Purples](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/06/08/534/) - [I love frogs](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/06/01/tree-frog/) - The Hyla Punctata tree frog, found in the Amazonian rainforests. - [Sky at night](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/05/26/milky-way/) - Lovely time lapse video of the Milky Way to reassure us all of our insignificance in this world. She's just had a baby and likes pandas, so.. - [Pigeons](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/05/07/pigeons/) - We have a community of pigeons living in the derelict building opposite. I want to see if I can record them all and thereby say 'ah there is pigeon no.3' or similar when I look out the window. And also as an exercise in drawing birds, and also just because I've become quite attached to - [Sketches on a train](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/05/06/sketches-on-a-train/) - Sketches while journeying from London to Manchester on a really delayed train.. - [Nike animation](https://kathrynpinker.com/2009/04/28/nike-animation/) - I can't stop watching this Nike ad.
